The Skinny

  • Acting: B- (Perlman is ever-likeable as Hellboy, but Selma Blair sounds like a bored teenager and Seth McFarland as Johan Strauss is too cartoonish.)
  • Direction: B (Del Toro's eye for fantasy and action is on full display, although he shows nothing we haven't seen before.)
  • Script: C- (Predictable, safe and overly familiar.)
  • Gore/Effects: B+ (Granted, it's PG-13, but it almost goes out of its way to avoid gore. Still, the makeup effects are dazzling, and I appreciate the effort to not go completely digital for the action sequences.)
  • Overall: B- (A fun romp that suffers primarily from a lack of freshness.)

Hellboy II: The Golden Army is directed by Guillermo del Toro and is rated PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi action and violence, and some language. It opens nationwide on Friday, July 11, 2008.
