Summary: South by Southwest began as a music conference and festival in 1987 and quickly found enough support to expand to film in 1994 in order to explore the art and business of independent filmmaking. The film festival has continued to grow into one of the major annual film fests in the US. In 2009, it unveiled the Fantastic Fest at Midnight, a midnight showcase of "genre" films, from horror to sci-fi to comedy, suspense, action and all things in between.
