Premise:
Based on the series of books by L. J. Smith, The Vampire Diaries centers around a love triangle between Elena and brothers Stefan and Damon. Elena is a popular and attractive 17-year-old high school student in Mystic Falls, Virginia, who is trying to recover from the deaths of her parents in a car accident. For the past four months, she and her younger brother Jeremy have been living with their Aunt Jenna. While Elena finds comfort in her best friend Bonnie, frenemy Caroline and ex-boyfriend Matt, Jeremy turns to drugs to deal with his parents' deaths. When new student Stefan enrolls in her high school, Elena and he have immediate chemistry; it turns out that she reminds him of his long-lost love. However, Stefan has an even darker secret: he's a vampire, although he's turned his back on his clan's violent ways. His peaceful way of life is challenged, though, when his estranged brother Damon -- who relishes his vampiric brutality -- turns up in town. The two continue their rivalry as they vie for Elena's affection. Damon, it seems, also sought Stefan's long-lost love a century ago.
