Although I eye PG-13 horror movies suspiciously, I don't automatically dismiss them. (
The Sixth Sense and
The Others, after all, are two excellent films that were rated PG-13.) The recent spate of PG-13 "tween" horror, however --
Prom Night,
The Haunting of Molly Hartley,
April Fool's Day -- feels like potential R-rated films that have been so blunted by a studio trying to lure 13-year-olds that they're rendered limp, lifeless husks devoid of any scares. I can overlook the sparkly vampires of
Twilight, since it's based on a young adult novel, but there should never, ever, ever be such a thing as a PG-13 slasher. Ever.
