The 1990s were perhaps the worst decade for horror movie fans since the advent of horror movies -- at least, in the US. The '90s weren't only artistically stagnant -- lacking much identity or innovation -- but some years would witness
less than 10 major theatrical horror releases, a number that would triple by 2005. Other than
Scream, only at the tail end of the decade did we get some sign of life and creativity from the likes of
The Blair Witch Project and
The Sixth Sense. Most of the genre acclaim and success during the era was reserved for serial killer thrillers like
The Silence of the Lambs and
Seven and big-budget adaptations like
Interview with the Vampire and
Bram Stoker's Dracula. Otherwise, horror fans had to suffer through efforts like
Vampire in Brooklyn.
