New Horror Releases in Theaters and on DVD: Week of July 27, 2008

What's Coming Out This Week?

By , About.com Guide

This week, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor aims to do better than last week's X-Files sequel, while Midnight Meat Train gets a limited release. On DVD, Doomsday and Lost Boys: The Tribe look to leave a bloody trail behind them.

A photographer investigating a serial killer who stalks the subway finds that the source of the terror lies even deeper than he thought. Based on a story from Clive Barker's Books of Blood series.

This third film in the modern reincarnation of The Mummy takes the action to China, where the evil Dragon Emperor (Jet Li) comes back to life and brings his undead army with him for good measure. It's up to explorer Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) and his family to stop them from taking over too much of the world. Maybe just Iowa.

A group of teens on a road trip end up stranded at a secluded house inhabited by a little girl who warns them of "the doctor" and the monster that the doctor has created. Wanna feel old? Gabrielle Carteris from Beverly Hills 90210 plays the MOTHER of one of the teens.

Doomsday

Doomsday DVD© Rogue
Neil Marshall (The Descent) directed this hybrid about a deadly virus that causes a portion of Great Britain to be walled up for 25 years. However, when the virus breaks free, it's up to a crack group of specialists to go behind the wall to find a cure. I think Pink Floyd appears at some point.

The Erotic Grotesque Collection

The Erotic Grotesque Collection DVD© Arts Magic
This set collects three Japanese exploitation movies, so-called "pink films" that blend the sexual with the horrific. In Angel Guts: Red Classroom, a man discovers that the rape scene in an adult movie is in fact real. Malice@Doll is an animated film about a broken sex robot. In Love - Zero = Infinity, a man is hired to spy on a woman who turns out to be a vampire of sorts.

Hair Extensions (EXTE)

Hair Extensions (EXTE) DVD© Tokyo Shock
On the heels of the Korean shocker The Wig comes this tale of cursed hair extensions, which kill their new owners. This oddball concept comes from the director of the cult hit Suicide Club, so odds are it's even weirder than it sounds.

Two decades after the events of the vampire movie The Lost Boys, the niece of Sam Emerson (Corey Haim) falls in with a gang of vampires in much the same way that Sam's brother Michael did. It's up to her brother, with help from the Frog brothers, to draw her away from the gang and destroy the vampires once and for all.
