There aren't many DVD horror releases this week, but almost all of them are "high-end" fare from major studios, led by the remake of Shutter.
Asylum
From the director of (eek) Snakes on a Plane comes this tale of a college dorm haunted by the ghost of a demented mental hospital doctor who wants to continue his experiments from beyond the grave.
Guardians
A secret band of monster hunters seek to prevent creatures from another dimension from taking over the world.
Insanitarium
Like Prison Break with cannibals, Insanitarium stars Jesse Metcalf as a man who feigns insanity in order to be institutionalized in the same mental hospital as his sister. He plans to get her out, but things become more urgent when he realizes that a crazed doctor is experimenting on patients, turning them into cannibals.
Poison Sweethearts
In this throwback '70s-styled exploitation, women pushed to the brink fight back...with deadly consequences. Ya dig?
Shutter
In this reamke of the Thai hit, an American couple is haunted by the ghost of a Japanese woman they ran over in their car, who makes her presence known in the photos they take. The moral: cameras are evil.
Steel Trap
A group of people in an abandoned skyscraper for a New Year's Eve party end up in a twisted game run by a maniac who ensures that the losers end up dead.
Trapped Ashes
Seven strangers trapped inside the "House of Horror" during a Hollywood studio tour must tell their scariest personal stories in order to get out alive. This horror anthology features segments directed by big genre names like Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Howling), Sean Cunningham (Friday the 13th) and Ken Russell (Altered States, Gothic).
