A glut of international DVDs this week, headed by Australia's The Tattooist, Pakistan's Hell's Ground, Hong Kong's The Eye 3 and Korea's The Wig.
The Chilling
Ever wonder why cryogenics hasn't taken off? It's because of the fear that something like this will happen: the frozen bodies accidentally defrost early and (of course) turn into flesh-eating zombies that only Linda Blair can stop. Makes perfect scientific sense.
The Demons Among Us
This low-budget Australian flick seems to channel the spirit of The Evil Dead in a story about man who settles into his rural retreat, only to discover that demons occupy the nearby woods.
Desert of Blood
A vampire buried alive beneath the desert for 35 years is unearthed and sets about getting his revenge. But first, a shower.
Drainiac
A group of friends restoring an old house discover that it's -- you guessed it -- haunted. But this time, it's not a ghost, but rather a water demon that attacks people through the pipes! Shouldn't be a problem if you never use the toilet, though.
Eastern Horror
This collection gathers 10 oh-so-trendy Asian horror movies, but don't expect anything of the quality of The Ring or The Grudge. Instead, you get such "classics" as: Robo Vampire, Devil's Dynamite, Magic of the Universe, Counter Destroyer, Satan's Slave, Corpse Master, Vampire Resurrection, Devil Shadow, Calamity of Snakes and Devil's Box.
The Eye 3
This third film in the Hong Kong series The Eye (the first of which was remade in 2008 with Jessica Alba) follows a group of friends who discover a book that teaches 10 ways to contact the spirit realm. Of course, they take it for a test drive, or there wouldn't be much of a movie, would there? Note: this film was originally released in 2005 as The Eye 10 (because of the 10 ways to see ghosts).
Gingerdead Man 2: The Passion of the Crust
Charles Band's Full Moon Entertainment, which has made a living off of killer doll movies like the Puppet Master franchise, seeks to corner the killer pastry realm with the Gingerdead Man series, featuring a murderer reincarnated as a cookie. Seems like all you should need to kill him is a big glass of milk.
Hell's Ground
Pakistan might seem like an unlikely place for an over-the-top splatter movie, but such is the universality of blood 'n guts. Hell's Ground (AKA Zibahkhana) has your typical horror movie setup: a group of teens is on their way to a concert when their van breaks down in the middle of nowhere. What they encounter, though, is beyond what your typical horror movie entails, ending up as a mix between backwoods survival horror, a zombie movie and a slasher, with supernatural elements to boot.
J-ok'el: Curse of the Weeping Woman
The Mexican legend of "la llorona" -- the weeping ghost woman mourning her dead children -- comes to life in this tale of an American man looking for his lost sister.
