New Horror Releases in Theaters and on DVD: Week of June 1, 2008

Shirley MacLaine stars in this pre-Exorcist 1972 story of a woman who discovers that her brother's odd behavior (including a sudden fluency in Spanish) is related to his dabbling in Santeria, and she fears he might even be possessed by a malevolent spirit.

Thinking person's sleaze about two young female hitchhikers who are forced by a woman who picks them up to perform various sex acts. The torturous ordeal creates a cycle -- er, "circle" -- of violence that permeates into the two friends' lives.

This blood-soaked sequel to the cult Japanese film Red Room continues the story of a sadistic game in which cards are drawn in a series of rounds, and the winner of each round is allowed to do anything -- ANYTHING -- to the losers to make them quit.

Just when you thought it was safe to watch another movie about sharks, up pops Shark Swarm, a cheesy Jaws clone with a couple of hundred sharks instead of just one. It seems that an evil real estate developer has poisoned the waters of a coastal town in order to convince the fishermen there to sell their property. Unfortunately, the poison has the nasty side effect of driving sharks into a mass homicidal rage. Don't worry, though; they're all computer-generated anyway. Interestingly, this B-movie has enough of a budget to draw in names like Armand Assante, John Schneider, Daryl Hannah and Oscar-winner F. Murray Abraham.

This 1965 British effort from renowned Amicus Productions features icons Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee in a tale of a collector who acquires the skull of the Marquis de Sade and comes to realize that it has a life of its own.

This ahead-of-its-time 1981 slasher spoof predated the Scary Movie franchise by 20 years, telling the tale of a serial killer named The Breather who stalks teens at a high school who are sexually active (i.e., all of them).
