New Horror Releases in Theaters and on DVD: Week of Jan. 27, 2008

What's Coming Out This Week?

By , About.com Guide

Jessica Alba leads the way for theatrical releases this week with her remake of The Eye, while Shrooms scores a VERY limited release. It's a big week on DVD, with the Nicole Kidman-Daniel Craig vehicle Invasion and more than a dozen other assorted goodies (and a few baddies) heading to video shelves.

The Eye

© Lions Gate Entertainment
A remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film of the same name, The Eye centers around a blind classical musician (Jessica Alba) who begins to see ghostly images of death after she receives a corneal transplant. Of course, those images can't be any scarier than watching Good Luck Chuck. Zing!

Shrooms

© Magnolia Pictures
A group of American college students visiting Ireland to sample some "magic mushrooms" in the woods fall under attack from vicious creatures -- but are they real or just 'shroom-induced hallucinations? Where's Scooby Doo when you need him?

42nd Street Forever Vol. 3: Exploitation Explosion

© Synapse Films
In the spirit of Grindhouse, this collection gathers cheesy trailers for even cheesier exploitation films from the '70s and '80s, including "classics" such as Demonoid, Killer Fish and The House by the Lake.

1942

© Tartan Video
During World War II, a group of Japanese soldiers have ghostly encounters of the spooky kind in a Malayan jungle.

Aquarium

© Redemption Films
This French film came out the same year as Saw and has an eerily similar premise: six strangers find themselves trapped in a room as a disembodied voice instructs them on the rules of a "game" in which only one of them will survive. Do fish play a role? Stay tuned!

Barn of the Naked Dead

© Legend House
Do you really need a description of this 1973 shocker beyond the title? OK, a demented circus ringleader kidnaps three female singers after their car breaks down in the middle of the desert. In early "torture porn" fashion, he torments them under the guise of circus "training," while his mutant father kills anyone who escapes.

Deadly End

© Wizard Entertainment
A couple move into an idyllic suburban house, only to discover that their next-door neighbor is a raging psychopath. And his yard is unkempt.

Die and Let Live

© Heretic Films
The latest to ride the zombie comedy "zom com" -- or more specifically, the romantic zombie comedy ("rom zom com") -- wave, this film finds a lovable loser trying to woo the girl of his dreams in the midst of a zombie outbreak.

Eugenie de Sade

© Blue Underground
Adapted from the writings of the Marquis de Sade by equally pervy director Jesus Franco, this 1970 film tells the story of a father-daughter team who connect when they discover their mutual love for sex, torture and murder. Good times!

Euro Trash Triple Feature

© Shriek Show
Who says Europeans are classy? Here are three arguments to the contrary. In the Italian Witchery (1988), David Hasselhoff and Linda Blair battle an evil witch. Also from Italy is Bad Inclination (2003), which has authorities investigating a serial killer whose crimes are sensationalized by the press. Meanwhile, Faceless (1989) is a remake of the French classic Eyes Without a Face, remade by Spanish sleaze purveyor Jesus Franco.
