New Horror Releases in Theaters and on DVD: Week of Jan. 20, 2008

What's Coming Out This Week?

By Mark H. Harris, About.com

Untraceable is the lone horror/thriller of the week, where it will hopefully beat out a geriatric Rambo and the ungodly Meet the Spartans. On DVD, Saw IV aims to hack up the competition, while Swamp Thing looks to make things moist and sticky (ewwww...).

Untraceable

© Sony Pictures
An FBI agent specializing in cybercrime (Diane Lane) must stop a serial killer who films murders for his website. The more people who visit the site, the quicker the victim dies. Obviously, this isn't what Al Gore had in mind when he invented the Internet.

The Bushwhacker

© Jef Films
This grisly, ahead-of-it-time cult film from 1968 has a deranged woodsman shooting down a small airplane (!) and then hunting the survivors of the crash.

Juarez, Mexico

© Maverick Entertainment
A private investiagor named Johnny Cash (!) goes undercover to find out who's behind over 400 murders of women in Juarez, Mexico since 1993. Based on real-life events (minus the Johnny Cash part) that inspired Jennifer Lopez's film Bordertown.

The Kingdom: Series Two

© Koch Lorber Films
Acclaimed director Lars von Trier helmed this second (and final) season of the offbeat, Twin Peaks-ish series that inspired Stephen King's miniseries Kingdom Hospital.

Saw IV

© Lions Gate Entertainment
The Saw series shows little sign of slowing down, even with its killer lying dead in a morgue. You have to wonder how much further it can go, though. Will Saw VIII be in 3-D? Will Saw XI add a little kid to the cast to inject some youthful energy? Maybe Saw XIV will feature the career resurrection of Ian Ziering? Certainly, that would be the most terrifying yet.

Swamp Thing: Seasons 1 and 2

© Shout! Factory
The USA Network adapted the long-running sci fi/horror/action comic book Swamp Thing into a not-so-long-running TV show in the early '90s, and the first two seasons are now available on DVD! The story involves a scientist who's disfigured in a lab accident and retreats to his new home in the swamp, which he protects from evildoers. This, of course, begs the question: is there really that much evil going on in the swamp?

When Evil Calls

© Lions Gate Entertainment
Seemingly an attempt to tap into the Asian horror trend, When Evil Calls sounds like One Missed Call meets The Monkey's Paw: a mysterious text message pops up on high schoolers' cell phones and grants them one wish -- but only if they forward the message to their friends. The misworded wishes naturally go awry, leading to death and destruction. Oh, and there's a demonic clown in there somewhere, too. Starring Jennifer Lim, AKA the gal who got the involuntary eye surgery in Hostel, this British film originally aired exclusively through UK cell phone carriers as a 20-part serial.
