Stephen King's Under the Dome to Become an HBO TV Show?

© Scribner
At a recent book signing for his eagerly anticipated new book Under the Dome, legendary horror author Stephen King was videotaped tossing out the possibility that the mammoth novel could become "an HBO series." He didn't follow up on that tantalizing nugget to clarify whether he meant a TV show or a miniseries, or at what stage of the process this deal lies, so we're left to speculate...
You wouldn't think that they could make a TV show out of one book, but since Under the Dome -- about a small town suddenly cut off from the world by an invisible "dome" -- is over 1,000 pages, there's two or three novels' worth of material in there. And a show could go the route of Dexter, which has taken basically only one of its four seasons from a book; the rest has merely been inspired by the Dexter literary characters. With HBO finding success with True Blood, it wouldn't be far-fetched to think that they'd take a chance on another genre show, especially one with King's name attached.

Scream Queens Returning for Season 2!

It looks like Scream Queens, one of the rare VH1 reality shows that requires actual talent to win, will be returning for a second season! The news comes as one of the three judges on the show, director James Gunn (Slither), announced that he won't be serving as a judge on Season 2 due to a scheduling conflict. The first season was enjoyable, and winner Tanedra Howard had a pretty sizable role in Saw VI (and apparently will be returning for Saw VII), so I say bring it on!

Witches, we hardly knew ye. After only seven episodes, ABC has canceled its freshman dramedy Eastwick, a fluffy but enjoyable adaptation of the John Updike novel (and later film) that skewed more towards Desperate Housewives than towards horror. Oh well; my DVR will be pleased.

Upcoming Sequel News: Hatchet 2, Scream 4, Creepshow 4, Howling 8? Or Is it 9? Does Anyone Care?

© Dimension
Some recent news on upcoming horror sequels of note:
- Scream 4 will take place (appropriately) 10 years after Scream 3 -- thus no trying to pass off Neve Campbell as a college kid -- and the new (read: younger) cast member "will likely be the focus of the remaining two films in the trilogy."
- Hatchet 2 is on tap for 2010!
- Somebody somewhere is making something called Howling: Reborn While I'd be open to a big-budget, professionally done sequel/reboot to The Howling to help make up for the stinkers that followed in the series (part 5 was pretty good), this doesn't appear to be it.
- A fourth Creepshow film, entitled Creepshow 3D, is also under development. Unfortunately, it's from the folks who brought you the straight-to-video Creepshow 3 (not horrible but not great) and not the Stephen King/George Romero team that brought you the first two.

New This Week: The Echo, Samurai Princess, Twilight Stars Branch Out

© Lionsgate
In a light week horror-wise, no genre films hit theaters, and only a handful land on DVD, led by the outrageous Japanese splatter-fest Samurai Princess, the English-language remake of the creepy Philippine ghost movie The Echo (Sigaw) and a pair of movies featuring Twilight supporting cast members Jackson Rathbone (Hurt) and Ashley Greene (Summer's Moon).

Thinking Outside: The Box Movie Review

"This means something wet."
© Warner Bros.
The Box takes a relatively straightforward short story ("Button, Button") that had been featured in the '80s version of The Twilight Zone and warps it into a head-scratching metaphysical endeavor that still manages to be fairly engrossing despite its flaws. Read about it in my review of The Box.
