Sometimes I think that Stephen King writes at such a hectic pace just to keep up with the film and TV adaptations that will eventually claim everything he's ever penned (Stephen King's Grocery List: The Movie!). The latest is "Gramma," a short story from the Skeleton Crew anthology that has spawned The Mist and the Creepshow 2 segment "The Raft." "Gramma" is being adapted into a feature film entitled Mercy that's to be directed by Peter Cornwell (The Haunting in Connecticut), written by Matt Greenberg (1408, Halloween H2O) and produced by low-budget horror hitmaker Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Sinister).
Frances O'Connor (A.I., Timeline) is in line to star, presumably as the mother of the young boy in the story who discovers that his ailing grandmother, Mercy, is a witch who made a pact with supernatural Lovecraftian entities. Interestingly, "Gramma" has already been adapted once before, for the '80s incarnation of The Twilight Zone; you can watch the entire thing here. It will be interesting to see how the film expands what's a fairly concise tale; a Cthulhu sighting perhaps?
