If you, like me, have been holding your breath for the better part of two decades hoping for a return to the horror genre from writer-director David Cronenberg, you may soon be getting the next best thing. His son Brandon has directed his first film, Antiviral, and it appears that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. The concept -- revolving around a clinic that sells viruses culled from celebrities to their rabid fans -- falls into the elder Cronenberg's "body horror" wheelhouse, where he generated an astounding string of genre classics (Shivers, Rabid, The Brood, Scanners, The Fly, Videodrome) early in his career. If there's any doubt at the "Cronenberg-ness" of Antiviral, the first trailer should clear that up faster than a celebrity cold sore.
IFC Midnight has picked up the US rights to the Canadian movie but hasn't announced a release date yet. It's a safe bet that Antiviral will follow IFC's typical distribution pattern of a limited theatrical release simultaneous (or thereabouts) with on-demand availability.
