Comedian Marlon Wayans, who co-wrote and co-starred in the horror spoofs Scary Movie and Scary Movie 2, is returning to poke fun at the genre -- coincidentally (or perhaps not) in the same year (2013) that the Scary Movie franchise returns from a long hiatus for its fifth outing. Wayans and Rick Alvarez, who collaborated with Wayans as producer on Scary Movie 2, White Chicks, Little Man and Dance Flick (which Wayans co-wrote but didn't feature him in front of the camera), have teamed up to pen a parody of Paranormal Activity and the glut of similar "found footage" horror movies of late.
Initially, the film was called Smart Ass (which to me would imply it's a spoof of Kick Ass), but Bloody Disgusting is reporting that it now is untitled. Despite not having a title, though, the movie apparently has an official synopsis:
From the creators of Scary Movie comes another hilarious horror spoof, a parody of the Paranormal Activity franchise. When newlyweds Malcolm (Marlon Wayans) and Kisha (Essence Atkins) move into their dream house, they quickly find they're not alone. But it's not the house that's haunted, but his wife that is possessed with spirits -- or as Malcolm calls it -- "relationship baggage." Malcolm hires everyone from a priest to modern day ghost busters to rid her of the demon, determined not to let the evil spirit ruin his marriage...or his sex life for that matter.
Sounds...um, well...yeah. Let's just hope it channels more Scary Movie and less Little Man. I do agree, though, that the found footage format is prevalent enough that it's ripe for parody. Reportedly, The Devil Inside will also be a target; let's hope they find space to squeeze in other hits, like Cloverfield and Quarantine, as well.
Apart from Wayans and Essence Atkins (who appeared in Dance Flick), the new film will also feature familiar faces Cedric the Entertainer, Nick Swardson, David Koechner and Affion Crockett. No release date has been set, but the similarly themed Scary Movie 5 hits theaters on April 19, 2013.
