Eli Roth is making his long-awaited return to the director's chair in an unexpected place: Netflix. The movie rental and streaming service is moving into original programming, and Roth is executive producing and directing a new hour-long series for the platform called Hemlock Grove -- his first directorial effort since 2007's Hostel: Part II.

The show is based on a gothic horror novel by Brian McGreevy that won't actually be published until March 2012 and whose plot is vaguely described by Deadline as "set against the backdrop of our darkest myths, adolescent deceptions, ravenous relationships and rumors of a werewolf." The series comes from French film studio Gaumont's new American TV offshoot, the same outfit that is producing the Hannibal TV show for NBC. There's no word on when Hemlock Grove will air, but it's safe to assume it won't be until at least the March publication date. Two other original Netflix programs -- House of Cards and Arrested Development -- will begin in 2012 and 2013, respectively.
