Unfortunately, the recent legacy of the 1973 cult favorite The Wicker Man has been dominated by the so-bad-it's-good 2006 remake starring an over-caffeinated Nicolas Cage. Now, Robin Hardy, the director of the original film, has returned to set things straight with The Wicker Tree, an adaptation of the novel Cowboys for Christ he wrote in -- wait for it -- 2006. (The book came out before the remake, thus blowing the theory that Hardy was so scarred by the movie that he sat down and pounded out a novel.)

The Wicker Tree isn't an official sequel -- more of a "companion piece" inspired by The Wicker Man -- but semantics aside, it's a sequel. The story follows the basic premise of the original -- a devout Christian (in this case, two American missionary types) runs into a Scottish pagan clan with ulterior motives -- and the great Christopher Lee, who played the villain in the 1973 film, even makes an appearance. The Wicker Tree will receive a limited theatrical run starting January 27. Until then, check out the trailer.
