It's no secret that horror movies are not exactly critical darlings, but a recent flurry of commitments from "highfalutin artsy-fartsy types" to genre pics might make you wonder if you'll need a beret and soul patch to gain admittance to these horror movies "films":
- Sir Ian McKellen and Dame Judi Dench have signed on to star in The Curse Of The Buxom Strumpet, a feature-length adaptation of the zombie comedy short E'gad, Zombies! (whose title they should've kept, if you ask me), about a zombie plague in 18th century England. Shooting is set to begin later this year with about a $3 million budget.
- Oscar-winning writer-director Neil Jordan (The Crying Game, Interview with the Vampire) will direct Oscar-nominated actress Saoirse Ronan (Atonement, The Lovely Bones) in Byzantium, with Ronan playing a girl turned into a vampire by her mother (played by Clash of the Titans' Gemma Arterton). Filming will start in October with a $11 million budget.
- Critically acclaimed indie filmmaking pioneer Jim Jarmusch (Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, Broken Flowers) is likewise boarding the vampire train, this time with Oscar winner Tilda Swinton and Oscar Nominee John Hurt. The untitled project will shoot in early 2012 and is described as a "crypto-vampire love story," whatever that means.
