Legendary B-movie director/producer Roger Corman, who has over 100 low-budget horror movies to his name with titles like Attack of the Crab Monsters and Attack of the Giant Leeches, did the unthinkable on Saturday: he received an Academy Award.
The 83-year-old "King of the Bs" was awarded an honorary Oscar for his body of work, which, though critically derided, included notable films that would later be remade like Little Shop of Horrors, Death Race and Piranha. Additionally, Corman's productions helped launched the careers of the likes of Jack Nicholson, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, James Cameron and Robert De Niro.
Saturday's ceremony, which also honored actress Lauren Bacall, marked the first time the honorary Academy Awards were presented outside of the Oscar telecast, scheduled this coming year for March 7, 2010.
