For many people, The Happening will be M. Night Shyamalan's third strike in a row (for me, only his second), but horror fans should be pleased to find this an edgier affair (the first of his films to receive an R rating) with oodles of disturbing imagery. Unfortunately, there's little else to recommend. Read my review.

That’s too bad. I think myself and a lot of other movie lovers are really pulling for this guy. We had hopes that he was going to be the next Hitchcock (an influence I believe he has admitted).
But while I thought Signs and The Village were good films, he effectively pigeon-holed himself by so many films with the same kind of gimmickry.
Personally, I think he reads too much of his own press. He knows what we expect and he’s trying to deliver, perhaps a little too hard.
Perhaps he just needs to go and direct a straight superhero or slasher flick and give himself a break.

This movie was HORRIBLE!!! VERY VERY DISAPPOINTING!! DO NOT WAIST YOUR MONEY and ESPECIALLY YOUR “GAS” on this movie. Mark WALBERG should have been ashamed to play in such a horrible movie!

outburst - I too root for him. I think he has the potential to be a Hitchcock-meets-Spielberg hybrid. I think M. Night’s next movie is going to be a kids’ pic, The Last Airbender — based on a cartoon — so that might be the break he needs to get back on track. He’ll have a totally different audience for that one, but maybe it’ll help clear his mind and get him back to where he needs to be mentally. Maybe when he returns to “adult” movies, he should focus on directing and not write all of his films. Wearing too many hats might not leave him time to truly devote his energy to each task. Just a thought.

I can’t believe the hype, not only was this poorly made, the version I saw at Norwood cinema in Adelaide had the microphone showing in many shots! Unbelievable! The audience was laughing every time it made its way onto the screen, at least a dozen times. And the acting was woeful.

No mikes popped up when I saw the film, but I guess that has something to do with the screen you see it on (that’s something I’ve always wondered about; good to know). That said, there are plenty of other things wrong with the movie.

This movie has got to be the worst movie of the year so far. Bad plot, bad acting, and especially bad directing. I will never watch another M. Knight Shaymalan movie as long as I live. What a waste of $9.00 and 2 hours of my life. Avoid this movie at all cost PLEASE…
