As The Happening opens in theaters nationwide, let us pause to look back on the career of director M. Night Shyamalan. He's had his ups and downs, but even at his worst (Lady in the Water), he at least tries to be original. And while his twist endings make for a convenient target for critics, they usually work pretty well -- Signs being the only true dud.
