Sam Raimi's Ghost House to Scare Up DVDs
Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures, which brought us big-screen scares like The Grudge remake and 30 Days of Night (and, to a lesser extent, Boogeyman and The Messengers), is now extending its reach to the direct-to-video market with a new brand called Ghost House Underground. Because, really, we don't have enough direct-to-video horror. Kidding. This actually is a great idea. With the slew of DTV cheapies out there, it's hard to know which are any good, so having a name like Raimi's attached could provide a stamp of quality that makes horror fans' jobs a bit easier. At least, theoretically. We'll see exactly how good the films are starting this October.
Ghost House Underground plans on releasing 12 to 20 films per year, most through Lions Gate Entertainment. The opening slate, surprisingly Scandanavian in flavor, includes:
- Brotherhood of Blood: A group of vampire hunters infiltrates a vampire nest in order to rescue one of the team members. Stars horror icons Ken Foree and Sid Haig.
- The Last House in the Woods: An Italian gorefest about a young couple being held captive by a sadistic backwoods family.
- Dark Floors: A Finnish film about a father seeking to remove his daughter from a hospital, only to run into creatures from another dimension. Features members of the Finnish metal band Lordi
- Room 205: A college student unwittingly releases a murderous ghost in her dormitory in this Danish entry.
- The Substitute: Another Danish film, this one about students who begin to suspect that their new teacher is a mind-reading alien.
- Trackman: In this Russian movie, a group of people encounter a deranged killer in the abandoned subways of Moscow.
