Mark's Horror & Suspense BlogNew This Week: I "Shutter" to Think Ah, sweet puns; where would I be without 'em? And where would American horror be without Asian horror? If we're not busy copying them, we're just outright remaking them, and the latest entry comes not from Japan (like The Ring or The Grudge) or Hong Kong (like The Eye), but rather from Thailand, which is developing its own horror chops of late. In Shutter, a newlywed American couple visiting Japan accidentally runs over a woman in their car and soon thereafter begins to see ghostly apparitions in their photos...and elsewhere. Can you guess where? Tune in to find out!
With the widest opening of the upcoming weekend, Shutter ought to make a push for #1, but the box office track record for Asian horror remakes hasn't been great since The Ring Two in 2005 (The Grudge 2: $39 million, The Eye: $31 million, One Missed Call: $27 million, Dark Water: $25 million, Pulse: $20 million), so I wouldn't get my hopes up. I mean, it stars Joshua Jackson after all. On DVD, there's a ton to keep you locked in your mother's basement this week, with all eight of 2007's After Dark HorrorFest entries hitting the video shelves, plus the biggest semi-horror movie of last year, I Am Legend.
