Doomsday Cracks Top 10; Funny Games Not So Much

Monday March 17, 2008
DoomsdayIs Doomsday really horror? Maybe not, but it's close enough that its cracking of the box office top 10 this past weekend is reason to celebrate -- although, frankly, not that hardy. The film made under $5 million in fewer than 2,000 theaters, for a so-so per-theater average of around $2,500. A lack of big-name stars and perhaps confusion over its genre might've hurt business. That said, Doomsday far outpaced Funny Games, which showed on under 300 screens and managed only around $500,000, for a not-so-funny sub-$2,000 average.
