The two main stars of the upcoming prequel to The Thing (The Thing Before?) have been named, and they're only slightly more recognizable than the director, Matthijs Van Heijningen Jr. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Black Christmas, Final Destination 3, Death Proof) will play the female lead, described by The Hollywood Reporter as "a Ph.D. candidate who joins a Norwegian research team in Antarctica after it discovers an alien ship in the ice." Joel Edgerton (Whisper, Acolytes), meanwhile, will play the male lead, "a blue-collar mercenary helicopter pilot," not unlike Kurt Russell's role in the 1982 film. Production is set to begin on March 15, 2010.
